“So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing”. T. S. Eliot
Oakland was once the home of a large forest of redwood trees. But after years of logging and forest fires, the redwoods that remain are young trees planted by humans. Eucalyptus has taken over much of the landscape and these trees in comparison are water hoarders.
This piece features the soft duffy bark of the Redwood as well as the papery bark of the Eucalyptus. The little blue berries are Vaccinium ovatum, the evergreen huckleberry. The big flower Romneya coulteri, also called a fried egg flower, is a Southern California native brought north for its extreme drought tolerance.
